Hi Mia, I concur software developers of these social media platforms do in fact utilize algorithms to classify, categorize, and target individuals for personalized experiences. It is a little frightening knowing this, but technically these platforms do have their terms and conditions posted which would lay out this information. To your point it's a little tough when we're so connected nowadays.
Hi Mia, I also find the idea of our every move on internet being tracked alarming. We don't even bat an eye when using our devices because it is such a normalized habit. However, I bet if some of us stopped to think about how these online services collect all kinds of data on us, a lot of us would be uncomfortable. Like Joshua said we do normally consent to this, but I know most of us are not concerning ourselves with the terms and conditions like we should be.
Hi Mia, I do agree with your statement about someone's online presence does not represent their true individuality because with all of this tracking online and information being stored you can never tell what is true and not about a person. Someone's past and present self can be a completely changed self, which you stated about just one search of someone's name can ruin a career for them by something that happened in their past. Our identities and self are represented and created by algorithms.
I agree with you when it comes to how knowing that being tracked through our media devices it would limit people from spending so much time. Like you said it makes it hard for the person to be able to limit themselves if they are doing it for work. I think if someone finds a balance then they will be good to go.
I agree it is scary knowing that our lives are under surveillance through social networking. That's why I feel like people should have a balance when they are on social media. I believe social media can be addicting to some and it is alarming that people do not care.
Hi Mia, I really enjoyed your takes in this post! It truly is so fascinating how aware we are of the tracking, yet how normalized it is in our society. We have the knowledge and resources but it is too far accepted as the norm. Furthermore, your point discussing the unethical nature of certain data that is collected from us (such as social roles or work ethic) is very well-written and incredibly shocking. I hope going forward we as a society move to more protected use online.
Media is the means by which something is communicated. Thus, social media would be the communication through technological social outlets. Networking via social media can be done in numerous ways with all of the resources available to us today. Social networking apps, websites, chatrooms, etc. allow people from all over the world to communicate, share knowledge, share ideas and opinions, and so on. Currently, I use Snapchat, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Pinterest. I use Snapchat and Instagram for similar reasons, including sharing experiences with friends, families, and other acquaintances. I typically only follow and stay connected with those I know, or who I once knew but am not close with anymore. LinkedIn is what I use for professional networking. Pinterest allows me to gain insight on art, specifically nail art, hair inspiration, birthday party themes, room decor, and others alike. Snapchat and Instagram are used daily, while LinkedIn and Pinterest are used more sporadical...
Reading about all of the different ways social media sites and companies use metrics and analytics to gather information on their users is amazing. The fact that so much information is being collected does not necessarily bother me. What bothers me is the fact that these social media companies are making so much money from collecting, analyzing, and selling users' personal information. To make matters worse, companies like Facebook do not always comply with privacy laws (Lipschultz, 2021). On the other hand, much of the analytical strategies used by social media companies are aimed at enhancing user experience. I personally enjoy when Instagram and TikTok suggest content that is related to content I have previously "liked" or shared. To my understanding, this is just one of many functions made possible through the collection and categorization of data. It seems as if social media companies and the businesses who use social media to bring attention to their brand capita...

I only ever use the app on my phone. I have noticed I commonly watch TikTok more frequently in the mornings when I first wake up and after work/evening. Honestly, I normally am on the app a lot more, but because I started a new job last Monday, I have been on my phone, in general, a lot less. I used to spend over two hours on the ...
